On September 20, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid of Maldives in Beijing.
Wang Yi said that it had been the consistent position of China that all countries, big or small, sare equal. And China is willing to consolidate and develop the future-oriented China-Maldives comprehensive friendly cooperative partnership based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. The Chinese side supports Maldives to maintain independence and sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to explore the development paths suited to the national conditions of Maldives. The new government of Maldives reaffirms that Maldives will constantly abide by the one-China principle, which is appreciated by the Chinese side. The Chinese side also supports Maldives, to play a more significant role in regional and international affairs as a representative of small island countries. The Chinese side stands firmly with the Maldivian side, especially on the issue of climate change.
Wang Yi said, both sides should deepen high level exchanges and enhance mutual trust. The Chinese side is willing to continue the cooperation on Belt and Road Initiative cooperation with the Maldivian side for the development of Maldives’ economy and society, with the principle of achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration, and also, with the highest standards to sustainably improve Maldivian people’s life standards. China wishes that the Maldivian side could offer preferential terms and sound business environment for Chinese enterprises and that the bilateral free trade agreement could come into effect soon. Both sides should deepen cooperation on areas such as improving people’s life standards and marine, and keep a close exchanges between teenagers, tourist industries, sports industries and sister cities, so as to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the people of two countries.
Abdulla Shahid extended congratulation on the upcoming 70th anniversary of the founding of New China. He said that China, as a great country with ancient civilization, has led the world in achieving inclusive and sustainable development and made achievements that amazed the world. China is also playing an increasingly important role in global affairs. Since China and Maldives established diplomatic ties 47 years ago, both sides have pushed for substantial development of bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. The new government of Maldives firmly adheres to the One-China principle and is committed to further promoting strong bilateral relations. Maldives is willing to deeply participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and strengthen communication and coordination between the two sides in international affairs.
After the talks, Wang Yi and Abdulla Shahid signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the two foreign ministries and witnessed the signing of cooperation documents.
